On a previous worksheet, you developed a proposition statement. Remember that all of the information in your speech must support this statement. For the record, write your proposition statement here:

Now give at least three examples of the problem as it exists in society today. These should be specific case studies, stories, facts or statistics. Be sure to document these examples with proper sources. (Note: If the audience is not aware that the problem exists, your examples must be especially strong and you may need more of them.)

1. Genetic engineering is used as a tool to compete with other countries, putting people in harms way for the “brag rights” of the country.

 2. A 38-year-old woman with fertility problems has three sons but wants a daughter to round out the family. She uses in vitro fertilization (IVF) to conceive and asks her doctors to transfer only female embryos. Should we be allowed to choose what kind of child we have? 

3. The concern about “designing” babies in embryo clinics.

Now consider in your speech what causes this problem to exist. List one or two possible causes:

1. Competition with other countries over who will be the first to genetically engineer the “perfect person.”

2. The pressure from the government to utilize our knowledge for genetically engineered purposes.

Next you must take into account why this problem should concern the audience at all. Why should they care about your speech? Relate the problem to the audience’s needs: health, safety, love, self-esteem. How might this issue affect their future health, career, economic security, peace of mind, children, etc.?

Note some possibilities here:

1. By genetically engineering people, we discontinue the phrase “everyone’s different.” And if everyone is the same, thinking the same, acting the same, nothing will ever change or get better.

2. By using genetic engineering, we make ourselves obsolete giving scientists control and no longer letting nature “take its course.”

3. By creating people to our liking, we regress in history giving in to a type of selective racism of our own subconscious.

Explain your solution. Along with an explanation, give some reasons why your solution is the best or most workable one for the problem. Cite some examples of where or how it has worked.

1. We can stop genetic engineering, using it only for the purpose of medicine, which can sometimes be as immoral and unethical. Saving lives with science should be more important than creating the perfect person with every feature that is to our liking.

there are some things i just cannot live without. i know you probably feel the same way about something or someone you love, but im serious when i tell you i cannot live without the following.

1. music. or my ipod.

2. books. anything to read.

3. my cell phone. (self explanitory)

4. my friends. they save my life everyday.

5. my sisters. they are my life

6. soup. :].

thats basically it. im not going to say i would die without my family because i wont. not to seem mean about that or anything, but i have lost my family and my best friend all at once and im still here. im not going to mention money or love or any of that because all i need is a book some soup my ipod and my friend around and im good to go for like a week. :]

my little sister is 3. her name is nadia. nadia is a very hyper little girl. very loud, and very easily bothered. she gets upset and yells quite a bit, and it is not fun. she doesnt like to sleep in her own room and she is a pre-school drop out. my sister is 3 and loud and younger than me. but my sister is not small. she is very tall for her age, people think she is 5 and not 3. its outrageous how big she is. she is big and loud and hyper. she’s a picky eater and doesnt listen. she draws on my walls with red sharpie marker and she yells a lot. she has flaming red hair like the devil, which is who she sometimes immitates. but my sister is 3 and yells a lot and runs and draws and doesnt listen. but shes my sister. and i love her anyway.

last night i attended the south game against the lacey lions. now i always go to all the games because im at the school anyway because im a cheerleader. so anyway, we had won the freshman and JV games the same day and everyone was extremely excited about the varsity game. we were winning for most of the first 3 quarters so we were all pretty sure we would win. it was down to about the last 4 minutes and we were down by about 4 points. we got the lay-up for 2 points then got a foul shot for one. meaning we were then only down by 1 point. time was running out and we had the ball. last 3 seconds and he shoots for 3. he misses. it was maybe the biggest let down of the entire season. being so incredibly close to the W and not the L and we lost. but, life goes on and we will win next time. :]

tv show: law and order svu. let me just tell you this is possibly the best show of all time.

color: orange and yellow. im not too sure why, i just love them.

food: soup. i used to eat it for breakfast everyday. just because i love it.

school: south. duh. its just awesome, spirited and i wouldnt change a thing.

cartoon character: eeyore. he was my dad’s favortie too. now i just love him.

drink: mountain dew or hi-c orange. who can deny that mountain dew is amazing?

candy: uhm i think twix. or orange tic-tacs. orange tic-tacs are definitely addicting.

class(not elective):english. like i said, i read a lot.

elective: creative writing. its fun. :]!

electronic item:ok heres a hard one. its either my cell or my iPod. i cant live without either of them.

place: beach. grew up there.

band: paramore at the moment. they’re good. listen and learn.

im sitting in my basement. (yeah my computer is in my basement, weird i know). when i turn around to see bert and ernie staring me down. now, its not everyday that bert and ernie, as a set stare you down. but yet, at this very moment. there they are. looking at me as if they know im typing about them. freaky little stuffed animals. you see some of you without younger siblings most likely have not had this happen to you before. but for me this is not a new thing. i have had barney, zoey, bj, baby bop, and yes, bert and ernie stare me down. well, its better than a clown.

aim. aim happens to be the best invention since sliced bread. i dont even know how the thing works, but its amazing. have you ever thought about how freaking awesome it is? you can talk to people on the other side of the country if you watned to. i have, it was really weird. im on aim right now and i hear the noises. ringing as if saying hello. its pretty fun too. its a lot easier than say, e-mail or actual letters too. well, just thought i would let you know about that.

have it be christmas already. did anyone ever notice that december always goes like snail pace? i did. but all of my christmas have been coming in the mail so im getting happier. not from UPS, from santa clause of course. :]. haha. we still have to say santa because i have a 3 year old sister. so obviously we cant go around telling her otherwise. im also really REALLY excited for the fact that im going to a concert in, yes, 12 days. its awesome. its a christmas gift and im getting it early obviously because christmas is in 14 days. im getting a camera, it came via UPS also known as santa. its great. i didnt think i was getting it because i know im getting these tickets. so excited by the way. have i mentioned that? but yeah. really pumped. cant wait. i’ll let you know how it was!
